Growing Meynell Funeral Services

In 1910, John Meynell established the family business, trading as Meynells Funeral Services and operating from their premises on North Road in Darlington. The Meynell family were well known in the area, as they ran a few local businesses within the community and the undertaking business was just one of these family ventures. As an innovative, forward thinking person, John opted to join the British Embalmers Society. Upon completion, he was then one of the first to be qualified as an embalmer in the country. John went on to win an award from Henry Shelly, the first president of the British Undertaker Association, which today is the National Association of Funeral Directors. The business grew from strength to strength under John’s tutelage, which allowed them to build a great reputation for the quality of service they delivered and therefore placed them in a firm position which allowed them to carry out numerous large funerals in the town. Once John passed, the business was passed onto his two sisters. In 1996 a second funeral home was opened on Stephenson Way in Newton Aycliffe for additional support to the wider area.

The history of Speckmans and Mason's Funeral Directors

Our Wingate funeral home, previously under the name of Speckmans Funeral Service, has served local families since the 1980s by arranging and conducting funeral services in County Durham with kindness, compassion and respect. The Wingate Funeral Home is a historic building, which was once used by the Meadow Dairy Company Ltd in the 1930s and now hosts two Chapels of Rest and a dedicated team of Funeral Directors and memorial consultants. In 1879, John Mason founded a joiners and undertaker business in Musgrave Street and later moved to Park Road. By 1928 the company had a large number of horse-drawn hearses stabling for 14 horses and a large fleet of taxis at their Park Road premises. The business still operates successfully today in Park Road.
